
WHAT IS IT?
Body positivity is the affirmation that people are comfortable with their body image, regardless of how society or pop culture. I’m sure that you have scrolled down the various social media images can be a bit intimidating but it is your own responsibility to care for yourself and the thoughts you have about yourself.
Some of the goals of the body positivity movement include:
challenging how society views the body
promoting the acceptance of all bodies
helping people build confidence and acceptance of their own bodies
addressing unrealistic body standards
This movement is about teaching people to understand that the media forces people to perceive bpdy’s a particular way which we can choose to challenge. It is important that we have a positive relationship our bodies. This means that we change the way we address food, style/clothing, fitness, physical health, identity, and self-care.
Body positivity is about being comfortable and realistic with our physical bodies and embracing it.
Body positivity is about challenging how society views people based upon their physical size and shape as well as how they judge on various factors --- including: gender, race, sexuality, and disability.
Why is this important?
The way we perceive ourselves affects our mental health.
How? This is because having a healthy body image influences how people feel about their “looks” and even how they judge themselves.
By being positive about our bodies we set the tone for a positive self esteem.
